Relationships & Creativity
Artists have had the reputation of seeking out solitary lives in order to do their art. Although a certain amount of alone time is essential for the creative process, what is equally important for the artist is connection with others.

In Anne Paris’s book, Standing at Water’s Edge, she talks about the importance of relationships in the artist’s life. Because this being what she called an “immersive” experience, they provide a meaningful source of support and inspiration. She believes three types of relationships are essential for the artist to continue to strive creatively. These types of connections help to provide support, strength and courage to continue to face the creative process.

Mirrors: These are relationships that recognize our talents and reflect back to us our specialness. They acknowledge our creative existence and validate our strengths and gifts.

Heroes: These are individuals that represent where we want to be. They have already succeeded in areas we are striving for. We admire and look up to them and their achievements as inspiration for us to continue to persevere and do our art.

Twins: These are the relationships we feel are kindred-souls. They are “like-minded,” in the same boat, and experiencing similar journeys. Because they understand what we’re going through, we find comfort and support from them. They remind us we’re not alone in our experience.

Any of these types of relationships can come in the form of a parent, teacher, partner, family member, a guru or friend.
